A large 8-point whitetail demonstrates rutting behavior including intimidation, scraping, and lip curl. Here a large 8-point buck demonstrates the classical behavior of buck deer during the rut. He is first seen jousting a little with a younger buck. Bucks normally fight only those around their own size. It is obvious by the submissive behavior of the young buck and the majestic stance of the larger buck, which is stronger. The buck then inspects under a tree for odor, which tells him not ...

Adventurers on the hunt for the fountain of youth accidentally enrage a group of hungry snakes.
We found a male lion this afternoon which had been mating with a female. When we arrived the female got up to hunt, and the male left in the opposite direction. As we headed back to Serena we then saw another mating pair of lions by the road. The male lion could hear the other lion roaring, and roared quietly in response. Eventually the now lone lion found the mating pair... maratriangle.wildlifedirect.org

Some of the world's largest bucks live in Ohio. Some of its world champion bucks have Boone and Crockett scores of over 300 points. Ohio's Beatty Buck may be the (or among the) largest ever taken by a hunter. Here two large bucks lock antlers, push, and shove during a fight. The deer on the right (Contender I) appears to be a 10-point buck (its right antler is at least a 5-pt. and the left, at least a 4-pt. with possibly a small pt. near the tip). The deer on the left has antlers that are much thicker at the base than those of the deer on the right, but they have been broken off. It is likely this deer would have had a much larger rack-perhaps a 12-point or more. The deer on the left is darker and larger. (These were wild deer in a natural setting - on our farm taped by Scott and extracted from a longer film.) The Virginia White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), often simply called the whitetail, is found throughout most of the U.S., southern Canada, Central America, and in the northern portions of South America. However, in the western U.S., the mule or black-tailed deer is more common. The male (buck) can weigh more than 400 pounds and the female up to 175 pounds. Males of one year or older have antlers. Young bucks with very small antlers are called button bucks. When the antlers begin to grow in the late spring, they are covered with a very vascular tissue known as velvet or moss. This drops off later. The Boone & Crockett scoring system is used to rate antlers or racks. Bucks shed their antlers at the end of breeding season (rut). Some female deer also have antlers. Ohio has some world champion bucks with Boone and Crockett scores of over 300 points. The White-tailed deer is a generalist, which can adapt to a wide variety of habitats, including woodland, open savanna, and even sage areas. The coat is grey-brown in the fall and winter and reddish brown in the spring and summer. It is recognizable by its white underside of its tail, which it uses ...
